DETROIT — Community leaders and a group of legislators representing Detroit in Lansing plan on fighting the city’s proposed appointment of an emergency manager. They say the appointment of an emergency manager is a violation of people’s rights, and unconstitutional. One of the actions they plan on taking is writing a letter to U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder asking him to intervene. The group held a news conference Monday at the Cadillac Place. The Detroit NAACP branch was also present, along with the local Rainbow PUSH Coalition and the National Action Network.
Michigan Governor Rick Snyder declared Detroit in a state of financial emergency last Friday, making way for an emergency manager to be appointed to oversee the city’s finances.
State Rep. Fred Durhal, D-Detroit who’s also a candidate for mayor says no matter who’s appointed as the city’s EM the community is going to continue to voice their concern and urged governor Rick Snyder to work with Detroit residents and state legislators to make sure things are done fairly. Some members of the Detroit City Council were also expected to meet individually with state Treasurer Andy Dillon. A spokeswoman for Dillon said the meetings were private. Snyder says he has a top candidate in mind to be the city’s emergency financial manager, but would not disclose the individual’s name. There have been media reports that it could be 2013 presidential Republican candidate Mitt Romney.
