DETROIT — The Wayne State Board of Governors recently announced that they intend to make a decision by the end of May on who will be the University’s next president, according to the Detroit Free Press.
A search committee, comprised of faculty, staff, board members and community members has been meeting for several months to evaluate the 50 applications that they have received for the position. Currently, they have narrowed down the list to six candidates, but no names have been made public. The board is currently interviewing the remaining candidates.
The search for a new president ensued after current President Allan Gilmour announced that he would be retiring from his post. Gilmour has been battling prostate cancer, since taking over as interim president in 2010. His two-year contract with the University, for which he is paid $410,000 annually, expires this June.
During his tenure, Gilmour has been known for shaking up the culture at the University, including toughening admissions criteria. Gilmour was recently presented with a resolution, honoring him for his work at WSU, by WSU Student Senate President Taz Ahmed.
