DETROIT — Employees earning minimum wage across southeast Michigan have come together to protest low wages through, what is being called the D15 Campaign. According to the campaign’s website, D15 represents workers from more than 50 employers – food and retail – who are making tremendous profits, but do not pay employees enough to support their families and to cover basic needs, such as food, healthcare, rent and transportation. The campaign hopes to get the message across to these employers that minimum wage is not fair pay.
Detroit resident and McDonald’s employee Keith Bullard, 29, who is a husband and father of two, must support his family on his own, because his wife is unable to work, due to health-related issues. He says that the $7.50 an hour he makes at McDonald’s isn’t enough to cover his family’s basic needs.
Companies that are being targeted by the campaign, include Burger King, KFC, Dollar Tree, Little Caesar’s, Domino’s, Long John Silver’s and more. For more information on the campaign, or to sign your name to its online petition, visit: www.detroit15.org.
