This month, leaders from all religious and cultural backgrounds, along with civil rights organizations, businesses and community members, will walk side-by-side to commemorate the 50 year anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King’s walk down Woodward Avenue in Detroit, after which he delivered his world famous “I have a dream speech,” before he delivered it in Washington, D.C.
The event will take place on June 22 at 9 a.m. on Woodward Avenue in Detroit.
The event is being coordinated by the NAACP Detroit, UAW, Ford, GM and numerous faith-based organizations. Thousands of people are expected to participate in the March, including Jesse Jackson, Martin Luther King III, Al Sharpton, Aretha Franklin, John Lewis, all state and local dignitaries, celebrities and others.
“The Muslim community is a vital and important part of this region and this nation and has always worked within the civil rights arena to better the community. I urge you to be a part of this…We cannot afford to not take advantage of this monumental event,” said Attorney Nabih Ayad, chairman of the Arab American Civil Rights League.
