The Dearborn Planning Commission recently approved a plan to turn the current Dearborn City Hall on Michigan Avenue into work studios and apartments for low-income artists.
The City had previously verbally agreed to sell the building for $1.65 million to Artspace Projects, Inc., a national non- profit organization that helps artists find affordable living and work spaces.
Artspace had applied for a low-income housing grant from the Michigan State Housing Authority last August to finance remodeling the City Hall into residences for artists, while preserving its historic facade.
If Artspace secures the funds it needs for the project, the City government will be set to move to a vacant building next to the police station on Michigan Avenue
