DEARBORN — On June 29, the Arab American National Museum (AANM) announced that Devon Akmon would take over as its new director. Akmon previously served as the deputy director of the museum and had been overseeing all daily operations, since the retirement of former director Anan Ameri in May.
Akmon started working for the AANM as a curator when it first opened in 2005. In his first two years on the job, he played a major role in granting the museum Smithsonian-Affiliate status.
Akmon’s appointment comes after a lengthy nationwide search for a qualified director by the museum’s board, who eventually decided that the best person fit for the position was from within the institution itself.
The new director is active with several art and non-profit organizations in Metro Detroit. He has a bachelor’s degree in history and psychology from Michigan State University and a master’s degree in historic preservation from Eastern Michigan University.
