DETROIT — The Michigan Supreme Court announced that it has made recommendations that four Wayne County Circuit Court judge positions be cut, while other counties in southeast Michigan, including Oakland and Macomb together, should gain a total of six new judge positions.
The cuts to the Wayne County Circuit Court, which were proposed by the State Court Administrative Office, are part of a plan that would eliminate eight county judgeships statewide. According to a report, the reductions would be made by attrition, taking affect when a judge leaves office, or dies.
In accordance to the proposal, Oakland County Circuit Court will gain two judges and Macomb County Circuit Court will gain four.
The Supreme Court decided that Wayne County has four more judges than needed for its budget.
The plan also involves combining district courts in some Wayne County communities. Suggestions have been made to consolidate Westland’s 18th District Court with one, or more of the courts in nearby Redford, Dearborn, Wayne and Plymouth.
