ANN ARBOR — The University of Michigan is testing what could be a revolutionary weight loss pill. The pill, which was originally created to treat canker sores, has been tested on mice and has left them much slimmer.
The remarkable weight loss that was evidenced on the mice has led Dr. Elif Oral to experiment with the pill on overweight humans. He will test the pill on 20 individuals who are either obese, or who have type 2 diabetes. If use of the pill does not generate any major side effects, Oral will make it the subject of greater research, which may lead it to become a mainstream drug.
Oral told the Detroit Free Press that nothing is certain about the effects of the pill on humans, but if it works, it could rid people of type 2 diabetes and fatty liver disease.
