DEARBORN — Hussein Hachem was once in the same position as a lot of the students who receive services from the tutoring company he established about six months ago.
He learned how expensive tutoring could be when he first emigrated from Lebanon to the United States and started school, over five years ago. As an immigrant, he also found adjusting to life in a new country difficult.
“Things can get really tough for international students. They find simple things, such as applying for a driver’s license, or filling out paperwork, difficult,” Hachem says.
He received his undergraduate degree in biochemistry and chemical biology from Wayne State University last winter and established his company, EduCare Student Services, to make tutoring more affordable for college students and to also help foreign students, who have immigrated to the country permanently, or are just here temporarily for school.

Hachem, 25, earned a tutoring certificate from Henry Ford Community College and is the president of the Lebanese American Heritage Club’s Youth Leadership Committee. He is also the organization’s event coordinator. He plans on going to medical school and becoming a physician.
“When I first came to the United States, I needed somebody to help me and guide me the right way,” Hachem said.
Some of the services that the company offers international students include, but are not limited to, assistance with documents in the application process; finding cheap apartments and/or roommates from the same background; assisting students in the application for legal documents, such as social security numbers and driver’s licenses; along with other services.
Typically, the cost of tutors can run up to $60 or more per hour, preventing many students from even considering hiring one. Educare Student Services’ hourly rates range from $11 to $21 an hour.
Hachem says that he didn’t start the company to make money and just wants to give back and serve the community, by offering affordable educational services.
“I wanted to do something to help them out. The prices are very cheap and affordable. This is actually about helping students raise their grades and getting them to save money,” he said. “As you educate students to become professionals, you’re actually saving them from the streets.”
Despite being open for less than a year, many students have already benefited from the company’s services and shared positive testimonials about it.
The company offers tutoring services for English, French, math, science, Arabic, chemistry, biology, trigonometry, physics, among other subjects.
Educare Student Services is also helping provide college students with jobs, by hiring them as tutors.
The company’s tutors are committed to assisting students to develop the skills and confidence needed to succeed in their overall academic and professional goals. They have also earned excellent grades in the courses they tutor and have been highly recommended by the departments, who are involved in recruiting, hiring and training them in their respective schools. Ninety-five percent of the company’s tutors are certified.
In addition, the tutors also work to maintain a line of communication between parents and instructors and even send evaluations periodically.
The company also prides itself on improving self confidence in students, and working with them on developing skills such as time management.
