LAKE HURON — Governor Rick Snyder scuba-dived in Lake Huron on Tuesday, Aug. 20, to explore the Monohansett, a large wooden ship that sank in the lake in 1907.
The shipwreck is located in the Thunder Bay Marine National Sanctuary, one of 14 marine areas protected by the federal government for ecological or historic reasons.
The governor’s publicized exploration of Michigan’s underwater site comes as a part of the “Pure Michigan” campaign to promote tourism in the state.
“It’s just a fabulous asset to the State of Michigan,” Snyder, who is a certified diver, said before jumping into the water. “There are literally dozens of shipwrecks here and that’s part of doing this exercise. It’s to show ‘Pure Michigan’ and how great we are. We have people coming from all over the world to come here, visit and dive.”
