DETROIT – A massive coalition of workers and civil rights advocates will be joined by immigration reform advocates and other social justice groups to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, during which Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. delivered his landmark “I Have a Dream” speech.
The coalition comes together during a time when many civil rights issues, including the rights of working families, have come under attack in Michigan and across the nation. From “Stand Your Ground Laws” that move society closer to race-based vigilantism, to immigration laws that are selectively enforced, based on race or religion, to the destruction of worker protections, through so-called “Right to Work” laws, justice issues remain at the forefront for civil rights advocates.
The march will begin at St. Anne’s Church and end at Clark Park on Saturday, Aug. 24, from noon to 3 p.m. More information can be found at the Michigan United website: www.miunited.org.
