ANN ARBOR — A “Boycott Israel” resolution was proposed at the University of Michigan Central Student Government meeting on Wednesday, October 1st, which was met with some questions.
The resolution, titled “The Humanitarian Boycott Against Israel,” was presented by Ann Arbor residents, and urged students to “boycott all products imported by Israel, to the maximum extent allowed by the law.”
Some student government members asked about the situation in Palestine, about the Israeli nuclear arsenal, and whether it would be accurate to label its government as racists. They plan to vote on the resolution in coming weeks.
This will not be the first attempt to pass an Israeli boycott resolution at U of M. Multiple attempts have been made in previous years, but were met with heavy resistance from both students and faculty. Recently, a string of university student governments across the country have passed their own Israeli divestment resolutions, including UC Berkeley.
