WASHINGTON - The Tea Party’s approval rating is spiraling downward — and that’s not just among Republican voters.
The conservative group’s favorability has fallen a dramatic 20 percentage points among moderate and liberal Republicans, down to 27 percent from 46 percent in June, according to a new Pew poll released on Wednesday.
The Tea Party’s favorability among all voters is 30 percent, down from 37 percent in June. The groups’ unfavorability has risen among all voters to 49 percent, from 45 percent in June. The new poll numbers follow a two-week government shutdown largely blamed on tea party favorite Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) and House conservatives.
Cruz’s own favorability numbers are a telling example of divisions within the Republican Party. Among tea party voters, Cruz’s favorability now stands at 74 percent, up from 47 percent in July. His favorability remains at 25 percent among mainstream Republicans, according to the Pew survey, down just one point from 26 percent in July.
The survey of 1,504 adults was conducted Oct. 9-13 and has a margin of error of plus, or minus 2.9 percentage points.
