DETROIT-Raquel Castaneda-Lopez made history Tuesday when she became the first Latina to be elected onto the Detroit City Council. Detroiters voted for people by districts. Castaneda-Lopez received 6,781 votes in District 6, which includes Mexican Town. Some of her priorities include improving safety and City services for citizens.
In an interview with a local television station, Castaneda said, “If we use that as a starting point, that we have a white mayor, and we have a white person and we have a Latino person, I think we will continue to be divided.”
