DETROIT — A truck carrying 144 pounds of alleged cocaine was seized by U.S. Customs and Border Patrol agents, while attempting to cross the Ambassador Bridge to Canada, on Sunday, Nov. 17. 

The agents stopped the truck, which was hauling a trailer seemingly filled with vegetables, on the American side of the border. But what they found inside of it was not all green.

“The driver, a Canadian citizen and his passenger, a citizen of India… were asked to exit the vehicle and open the rear cargo doors for inspection,” U.S. Customs and Border Protection said in a statement Tuesday. “A search of the bunk area of the tractor resulted in the discovery of 55 vacuum sealed packages with a combined weight of 144 pounds of alleged cocaine.”

Officers seized the suspected drugs and the vehicles for further examination. The driver and passenger were handed to Homeland Security Investigations and will face prosecution by the U.S. Attorney’s Office. 

“This cross border smuggling attempt was thwarted because of the vigilance of our frontline CBP officers.” said Marty Raybon, Acting Port Director at the border, in a statement. “I commend the CBP officers involved in stopping this shipment of drugs from reaching its destination.”
