The American Arab Anti Discrimination of Michigan canceled its upcoming gala that was scheduled to take place Friday, Dec. 13 where people planned to protest over the handling of the group’s sexual harassment scandal.
A statement issued by the organization’s new incoming director, Fatina Abdrabboh reads as follows:
Dear ADC Supporter,
The annual ADC gala banquet has traditionally been a key event for the ADC Michigan. In the recent past, it has hosted world leaders, local and national politicians, and most significantly is a gathering of the community’s devoted, esteemed, and committed members. I have assessed and examined the situation in Michigan, and have decided to postpone the Gala for this year. The decision has occurred with the full support of ADC’s incoming National President, Samer Khalaf. On one level, this decision is based on my deliberate clear break from components of the past, including an entirely new office location, staff, and overall ethos for ADC Michigan. On another more important level, I have decided to postpone the Gala because I believe this time is best spent healing and mending. From this point, we hope it is received as both symbolic and telling that the new ADC Michigan will strive to understand and meet the evolving needs of the community. Most specifically, ADC Michigan chose this announcement as a sincere and personal one from me, hoping it will be received as it is sent, from the heart. I offer full assurances ADC Michigan in 2014 will have a new direction.
