LANSING — Some people watch the Super Bowl for the football; others are only interested in the ads. Governor Rick Snyder’s re-election campaign is trying to capitalize of the popular event. The campaign has bought $400,000 in Super Bowl Sunday airtime.
The 60-second ad will air on Detroit’s Fox television affiliate during the National Football League championship game on Feb. 2. Next month’s ad will not be Snyder’s first during the Super Bowl. In 2010, the governor brought his campaign into the public eye with a Super Bowl ad.
WJBK-TV (Channel 2) revealed the ad purchase in its public files with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), on Tuesday, Dec. 7.
Snyder’s campaign spokesman Kyle Robertson told the Detroit News “stay tuned,” commenting on the ad.
The Republican governor has not officially announced his bid for reelection, but the Super Bowl ad will not be his first as governor. In September and October his campaign ran an ads proclaiming “Michigan is back.”
If Snyder decides to run for reelection, he is expected to face the likely Democratic nominee Mark Schauer, a former congressman from Battle Creek, in November of 2014.
