Makki moved to the United States from Lebanon when she was 13. She had been married to Fouad Makki for a year and a half and had an 8 month-old son.
Her mother in law Samia Makki described her as “beautiful and calm.”
“She loved my son, and my son loved her,” Samia said of her late daughter in law. “She was a good person, very polite and quiet.”
However, she added that Makki had a troubled childhood and was raised by her aunt after her parents abandoned her.
Samia said Makki kept to herself and seemed sad at times,” perhaps because she kept thinking about the past.”According to Samia, Makki’s father was begging his daughter for forgiveness at her funeral.
The Daily Star, a Lebanese newspaper, reported that Makki often complained that her father did not let her speak to her mother.
The father could not be reached by the Arab American News by press time.
News of Makki’s death started circulating on social media on Tuesday and sparked emotional reactions from shocked community members.
She will be laid to rest in her hometown of Batoulieh in Lebanon. Her family and friends accepted condolences at The Islamic Institute of Knowledge in Dearborn on Wednesday and Thursday.
