BEIRUT – The Syrian national detained by Army Intelligence for allegedly financing terrorist groups in Lebanon has been identified as Omar Juenieh, an Army source told Lebanese newspaper The Daily Star Thursday.
The source said that Juenieh, better known as Omar al-Homsi, was arrested Wednesday, Feb. 26, outside General Security headquarters in Beirut after information surfaced that he was involved in terror groups.
Speaking on condition of anonymity, the source said that investigation in the coming days would reveal whether Juenieh, who directs an Islamic charity that provides aid to Syrian refugees in Lebanon, had used his post to finance terrorist organizations.
Juenieh had just finished renewing his family residence permit when an Army Intelligence patrol detained him outside General Security’s headquarters, the source said.
The Committee of Muslim Scholars and a coalition of Islamic relief organizations condemned the arrest at a news conference, calling for his immediate release.
The scholars urged Army Intelligence to free two other detainees, identified as Sheikh Jalal Homsi and Tareq Zein.
The statement claimed that Juenieh had been arrested after an investigation report leaked to media implicated him in the case of detained terror suspect Naim Abbas.
