OAKLAND TOWNSHIP — The federal government this week asked Dr. Farid Fata for $10.2 million, and it also demanded that the indicted physician handover his 2011 Acura RDX Turbo SUV, along with several properties he owns.
Last year, Fata, 48, was charged with misdiagnosing and mistreating patients, fraudulently billing millions of dollars in the process and enriching himself. Fata could be convicted of additional money laundering charges, which would increase the monetary fine he owes the government.
Fata practiced medicine at his Michigan Hematology Oncology Centers in Clarkston, Bloomfield Hills, Lapeer, Sterling Heights, Troy and Oak Park. He allegedly administered chemotherapy to patients who had no chance of survival and intentionally misdiagnosed patients, all so he could charge Medicare for high-cost procedures. Several patients have come forward to share stories about their experiences. Fata and his wife have three children.
