DETROIT — Emergency Manager Kevyn Orr gave Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan and city council a five percent pay increase that will begin this month.
The pay increases are being given right after the city reached a tentative agreement with the Detroit Police Officers Association on a multi-year collective bargaining contract on Tuesday afternoon.
The DPOA has encouraged their members to vote “yes” on the city’s bankruptcy Plan of Adjustment in exchange.
Ballots were due on Friday, July 11.
Orr’s spokesman, Bill Nowling, said the 5 percent pay increase is the same raise that unionized workers received in 2012.
Detroit’s water crisis and bankruptcy continues to draw international attention. Last week the United Nations said it would intervene in the crisis that has led to thousands of families who couldn’t afford to pay their bills getting their water cut-off.
