DETROIT — A jury has been selected for the trial of a Dearborn Heights man who fatally shot Renisha McBride.
Theodore Wafer, 55, has been charged with second-degree murder, manslaughter and felony firearm in the November 2 death of McBride, 19. He told police he shot McBride with a shotgun when she banged on the front door of his home at 4:40 a.m., because he feared she was trying to break into his house.
Save for a couple of DUIs 20 years ago, Wafer has no criminal record. He held a job at Wayne County Airport with a high security clearance.
McBride had a blood alcohol level of .218 percent, three times the legal limit, according to a report by the Wayne County Medical Examiner’s office.
Opening statements in the case against Wafer began on Wednesday.
