DEARBORN — Fashion is a universal language, no matter what part of the world you are from. Similar to other art forms, it has a way of connecting people.
Fashionable modest-looking and fitting clothing has become a growing trend among women, especially those who wear the hijab.
Fashion shows help showcase new trends to the public. DIR Fashion is taking the lead by creating a Modest Trends Fashion Show for the community.
Host Farah Jalloul explained how the show came along.
“The idea of creating a modest trends fashion show started after Bushra of DIR Fashion and I started witnessing multiple Muslim communities coming together from New York, Chicago, and California to promote modest fashion shows,” she said.
This show is about more than just showcasing fashion trends, it helps send a message to the younger generation of girls.
“Modesty is so important because we live in a society that encourages young women that the only way to be attractive is to be wearing less clothes, which is not true,” Jalloul said. “Young girls need to understand that you can still look good and feel confident without showing too much skin.”
The show will feature clothing from local stores and online boutiques. These include DIR Fashion and Plume, Rayanns Wardrobe, Oriental Fashion, Al Madina Trading, Sehaj Boutique and more.
Models will include young women who wear hijabs and those who don’t. They’ll also represent different ethnicities and cultures.
Dressing modestly has always been emphasized in Islam, but now it has a more fashion-forward flare to it.
“The goal of the fashion show is to promote modest fashion and to show girls from the younger generations that you can still be fashionable while being modest and ascribing to the Islamic dress code,” Jalloul said.
The 2014 Modest Trends Fashion Show will be held at the Ford Community and Performing Arts Center on Aug., 2 at 5:30 p.m. Tickets can be purchased on dirfashion.com.
