MICHIGAN — The pressure to get Suzanne Kolb, the president of E! Entertainment, to fire the host of the network’s popular show, “Fashion Police” is mounting.
“Please write to the president of E! Entertainment and demand that she fire Joan Rivers as host of “Fashion Police” for her horrifying hate speech about the Palestinian people,” said Jeff Klein, a Palestinian rights activist.
Palestinian rights activists believe Rivers should be fired over the controversial remarks she made about victims of the ongoing humanitarian conflict in Gaza.
In an interview at an airport in Los Angeles, Rivers was asked about the current situation in Gaza by a photographer from Splash News Online. The photographer mentioned the nearly 2,000 Palestinians who were killed over the last month.
Rivers responded, “when you declare war, you declare war…They started it. We now don’t count who’s dead. You are dead. You deserve to be dead. You started it. You started it. Don’t you dare make me feel sad about that.”
Rivers went on to compare Israel’s operations against Gaza to the atomic bomb that was dropped on Japan during World War II.
“You were told to get out. You don’t get out, then you know you’re an idiot, and at least the ones that were killed were the ones with very low IQs,” Rivers added.
Rivers subsequently posted on Facebook that her comments were taken out of context, but didn’t issue an apology.
Rivers added that she was “saddened and disappointed” that that she said was taken out of context by the media.
“What I said and stand behind is, war is hell and unfortunately civilians are victims of political conflicts,” Rivers said.
The Palestinian Ministry of Health estimates that as of last week 1,888 people, including 446 children, have died and 9,804 were injured in Gaza. At least 70 percent of the dead were civilians.
According to Israeli officials, 64 Israeli soldiers and three civilians in Israel have lost their lives in the conflict.
Some argue there is a double standard when it comes to celebrities voicing their opinions on the Palestinian Israeli conflict. Legendary White House Correspondent Helen Thomas was forced to retire after a career in journalism that spanned nearly 70 years. Speaking to a rabbi at the White House while unknowingly being videotaped, Thomas—who broke barriers for women in journalism— said Israeli Jews should “get the hell out of Palestine” and “go home” to Germany, Poland and/or the United States.
Later, Thomas made more controversial remarks in Dearborn, when she said Zionists control the White House, Congress, Hollywood and Wall Street. Because of her remarks, the Wayne State University and the Society of Professional Journalists pulled awards in Thomas’ name.
