Over the last few months, the Chaldean community has held several rallies in metro Detroit hoping to raise awareness on the plight of Iraqi Christians.
The community is also working closely together to protect the future of religious minorities in Iraq.
This month the Adopt-A-Refugee charitable group, in collaboration with Middle Eastern American Television, held a two-day telethon to raise money for displaced Iraqi Christian families.
On Tuesday, the Mosul Relief Fund, which was established by Adopt-A-Refugee in response to the terrorist group IS gaining a stronghold in Iraq more than two months ago, held a fundraiser at the Shenandoah Country Club in West Bloomfield and reportedly raised $100,000.
On Aug. 18 an emergency meeting was held at the Mother of Gold Chaldean Catholic Church in Southfield and organized by the Chaldean American Bar Association. Several Chaldean American attorneys attended the meeting to discuss strategies to address the Iraqi crisis.
Young Chaldean professionals, including law school and college students, are being encouraged to attend the In Defense of Christians (IDC) Summit 2014 in Washington D.C. from Sept. 9-12. About 35-50 community advocates are expected to join political and religious leaders to stand in solidarity with Christians of the Middle East and to lobby congress on behalf of the country’s minorities.
On Friday, Sept. 12 at the Max Fisher Center, Chaldean musician Majid Kekka will play alongside the DSO. Proceeds will benefit the Chaldean Voice and refugee resettlement programs.
