DETROIT — On Tuesday, Dr. Farid Fata plead guilty to 16 counts of healthcare fraud.
Barbara McQuade, U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Michigan, charged Fata, a cancer specialist, with healthcare fraud for being part of a $35 million scheme to submit false claims to Medicare last year.
In 2013 Fata was charged with misdiagnosing and mistreating patients, fraudulently billing millions of dollars in the process and enriching himself.
Fata practiced medicine at his Michigan Hematology Oncology Centers in Clarkston, Bloomfield Hills, Lapeer, Sterling Heights, Troy and Oak Park. He allegedly administered chemotherapy to patients who had no chance of survival and intentionally misdiagnosed patients, all so he could charge Medicare for high-cost procedures.
