JERUSALEM — Renewed clashes broke out early Thursday in East Jerusalem following the death of a Palestinian suspect who rammed his car into Israeli settlers Wednesday, injuring six and killing one.
Israeli forces and Palestinians clashed in the al-Issawiya, Ras al-Amud, Silwan and a-Tur neighborhoods early Thursday, witnesses said.
Locals said the entrance to al-Issawiya had been closed shut by concrete blocks, with Israeli forces firing rounds of tear gas at locals protesting the closure.
The 21-year-old suspect, a Palestinian from Silwan in east Jerusalem, succumbed to his wounds early on Thursday, the Shaarei Tzedek hospital said.
The incident came three days after a 5-year-old Palestinian girl, Einas Khalil, was run over and killed by an Israeli settler near the central West Bank town of Sinjil.
On Wednesday, violent clashes erupted in the Silwan neighborhood of annexed East Jerusalem between Palestinians and Israeli forces, eyewitnesses said, soon after the latter raided the homes of the relatives of the Palestinian suspect.
According to an eyewitness who spoke to Anadolu Agency, Palestinian youths were provoked when “a large number of Israeli troops and policemen raided and searched the homes of the relatives of Abdel-Rahman al-Shelodi, the man accused of running over settlers.”
Clashes also broke out in several other areas of Jerusalem and raged late into the night after what the Israeli police called a “hit-and-run terror attack.”
Meanwhile, the United States on Wednesday condemned what it called a “terrorist” attack by a Palestinian on Israelis in Jerusalem.
The U.S. has yet to condemn the killing of 5-year-old Palestinian Einas Khalil, or any of the almost daily attacks by Israeli settlers on Palestinians.
Hate crimes by Israelis against Palestinians, referred to as “price tag” attacks, are common in the West Bank, and are rarely investigated or prosecuted by Israel.
