DEARBORN — The Imam Mahdi Association of Marjaeya (I.M.A.M) is holding a blood drive on Sunday, Dec. 14 from 3 to 5 p.m.
The blood drive is being held in commemoration of the passing of Imam Hussain, the grandson of Islam’s prophet Muhammed.
Last month, Shi’a Muslims worldwide, including the large community here in Dearborn, commemorated the death of Hussain during Ashura remembrances.
“We will support the cause of Imam Hussain by spreading his divine message, which teaches humanity principles, values, sacrifice, and the importance of standing against oppression,” the group said in a statement announcing the event. All donors will be subject to a health screening beforehand.
The group said the community’s participation will help improve the image of Islam and Muslims, particularly since some media outlets continuously misrepresent the rituals of Ashura.
I.M.A.M is encouraging community members to donate blood at local hospitals and hopes area mosques also join in organizing similar blood drives. For more information on the event, call 313.562.4626.
