WASHINGTON — The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has formally announced that the Secretary of Homeland Security Jeh Johnson, has approved a request made by the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee (ADC) to extend and redesignate Temporary Protective Status (TPS) for Syrian nationals currently in the United States. 

In November, ADC filed a request to Secretary  Johnson, urging him to redesignate and extend the protection for Syrian nationals. ADC has previously submitted TPS requests to DHS in April of 2013 and January of 2012, both of which were granted.

Secretary Johnson is extending the designation of the Temporary Protective Status (TPS) for Syrian Nationals for 18 months, from April 1, through September 30, 2016. The redesignation allows additional individuals who have been continuously residing in the U.S. since January 5, 2015 to obtain TPS.

The DHS announcement will be published in the Federal Register on Monday January 5. The redesignation allows current TPS beneficiaries to re-register for TPS during the 60-day re-registration period. It also allows Syrian nationals who have been in the United States on or before January 5, to apply for Employment Authorization Documents (EAD).
