DETROIT — The Wayne County Commission voted 14-0 Feb. 5 to approve a five-year intergovernmental agreement with the city of Dearborn Heights for more than $1.4 million in improvements to Warren Avenue, between Telegraph Road and Outer Drive West in the city’s north end.
The Dearborn Heights City Council approved the intergovernmental agreement on Oct. 28.
The federal government is paying more than $1.2 million via the state Department of Transportation. That money was approved by the Commission on Aug. 21. The county will pay $163,987 and Dearborn Heights will contribute $92,563. The county will oversee the project.
Warren Avenue will be resurfaced with asphalt. Other aspects include adjusting drainage, repairing bridges and concrete curbs and installing Americans with Disabilities Act-compliant sidewalk ramps.
Most of that stretch of Warren Avenue is in Dearborn Heights; part of the north side is in Detroit.
“That stretch of Warren Avenue is in serious need of repair and has been for some time,” said Commissioner Diane Webb (D-Livonia), whose Eighth District includes Dearborn Heights. She added during the meeting that the project is “long awaited.
“My constituents have given me plenty of feedback on that stretch of Warren for a long time,” she said. “I’m so pleased that it’s being repaired. I’ve been fighting for it for years.”
The project is scheduled to begin in mid-April, weather permitting.
