SOUTHFIELD — A man stabbed two people at a bus stop on Monday night in Southfield after asking them if they are Muslim, the victims told the police. It the latest suspected hate crime in a wave of attacks against Muslims across the country.
The suspect stabbed a 52-year-old man five times in the face, neck and back, according to police. When the second victim tried to intervene, he was also stabbed twice. The stabbing occurred around 10:30 p.m. near Northland Mall.
The alleged stabber was arrested shortly after the incident near the crime scene. He had two knives and marijuana in his possession, police said.
The Southfield police said in a statement Tuesday that they contacted the FBI, and the bureau is looking into the possibility of a federal hate crime investigation.
The victims, who did not sustain life-threatening wounds, were released from the hospital.
The Southfield stabbing come less than a week after three Muslim students were murdered in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Also last week, an Islamic center was set ablaze in Houston, and an Arab American man was racially abused in Kroger in Dearborn.
