HAMTRAMCK — The city’s police chief Max Garbarino, resigned Wednesday afterthe city council held a special session to discuss why he was placed on paid leave and was put under investigation .
“I humbly ask to at least have the reason for why I was placed on leave,” Garbarino said at the special session. “I don’t have any idea of what this could be and I think it is only fair and just that I have a right to know why my gun, badge and ID was taken from me.”
Yet on Wednesday, Garbarino said he resigned to pursue other opportunities.
City Manager Carina Powell, who has only been on the job for about two months, launched the investigation.
Earlier this week Mayor Karen Majewski also said she didn’t know why Garbarino was under investigation.
“This community and this body deserves to know whether it was criminal. You know, what did he do that we are investigating,” said Councilman Anam Miah at the special session.
Garbarino has worked for the city since 2001 and had been the police chief since 2012.
“We have had a forensic IT director in here today and we’ll go from there,” Powell said after the meeting.
