DETROIT — Dearborn resident Joseph Fawaz has sued both the city of Detroit and its police department, charging that Sgt. Rebecca McKay, a member of the city’s Copper Theft Task Force who was allegedly caught on surveillance video planting evidence, has waged a years-long vendetta against his family-owned Southwest Metals.
According to reports, the city is trying to revoke the Dearborn recycler’s license because it’s both Muslim-owned and a small business.
In the lawsuit, Fawaz’s attorney, Nabih Ayad, wrote that McKay made continual attempts to intimidate and bully Fawaz and Southwest Metals in an attempt to put it out of business. He also claimed that McKay appeared to be planting evidence in a company surveillance video.
In a statement released Tuesday, Corporation Counsel Melvin “Butch” Hollowell, said the city, in reviewing the complaint, found no evidence of wrongdoing on McKay’s part.
