BLOOMFIELD HILLS — Oakland County Prosecutor Jessica Cooper has filed petitions with the Oakland and Wayne County juvenile courts concerning two students accused of bullying a Black 13-year-old boy with racial slurs.
The petition cites one of the alleged bullies with harassment and the other, who lives in Wayne County, with ethnic intimidation.
The bullied boy, Phoenix Williams, is a student at Bloomfield Hills Middle School. He recorded the bullying, which occurred on a school bus on March 13, on his cell phone. The case has led to a social media campaign, with a campaign against racism scheduled at press time to take place Friday at the school.
According to reports, there were adults on the bus at the time of the incident, but they were several rows away and were not aware of the incident at the time, in part because the bus was noisy.
Phoenix and his mother filed a harassment complaint on March 16.
The two juveniles have been disciplined, according to school district officials.
As to the juvenile courts, the judges have several options, including denying the petitions; ordering the boys into an adjudication or deferring the case to youth assistance programs.
A statement on the district’s website reads, “we will not tolerate this kind of behavior and have developed a plan of support for this young man to provide a safe environment for him.”
Supporters of Phoenix have established Twitter hashtags #JusticeForPhoenix and #PROTESTBLOOMFIELD.
There will also be a community forum at 6:30 p.m. April 28 in the Booth Center at 7273 Wing Lake Road.
