GAYLORD — A third member of the University of Michigan fraternity that caused thousands of dollars in damage to the Treetops Resort in January has been arraigned on a felony count of malicious destruction of a building greater than $1,000 and less than $20,000
Matthew Vlasic, an undergraduate economics major, was arraigned April 20 and could face a possible sentence of five years.
Sophomores Joshua Kaplan and Zachary Levin, both 19, had previously turned themselves in to police on March 25. According to reports, Kaplan, who was the president of the now-disbanded Sigma Alpha Mu fraternity, and Levin, an events planner, face 30-day misdemeanor charges that they allowed minors for whom they were responsible to drink alcohol. Their next hearing is June 11 and will either be a jury status conference or plea entry.
No other students have been charged in the incident in which 45 rooms sustained damage, as did ceiling tiles and exit signs. Students also broke both doors and furniture. Total damages have been estimated in excess of $400,000. U of M has placed the Sigma Delta Tau sorority on a two-year disciplinary suspension because its members “stood by at Treetops Resort and allowed others to vandalize the facility.”
