DETROIT—The family of
Terrence Kellom and various community groups held a press conference on Tuesday
to speak out against the 20-year-old’s shooting death.
Kellom was shot by an
Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer assigned to a
multi-jurisdictional task force known as the “Fugitive Apprehension Task
Force.”
The ICE officer was part of
the task force executing a arrest warrant for Kellom who was wanted for armed
robbery and felony firearms.
According to reports, the
task force entered the home without force when Kellom came charging at the
officers with a hammer and was shot.
The day after
his son was gunned down by an Immigration Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer,
Kevin Kellom spoke publicly about the shooting in front of his home on
Detroit’s Northwest side. “They brought my son down the stairs and executed him
in my face. My son died with a clenched fist, no hammer. My son reached for me
and was shot twice in the chest. (After that), eight more shots rang out.”
Donnell White, executive
director of the Detroit branch of the NAACP; Ron Scott, president of the Detroit
Coalition Against Police Brutality; Rev. Charles Williams II, president of the National
Action Network; Madre Marcia Ledford of Michigan United; Bobbi Jones of the
Neighborhood Council and representatives from the Baptist Pastors Council
participated in the press conference, along with Kellom’s family.
Kellom, who had a criminal
history dating back to his teens, was fatally shot on Monday on Detroit’s
northwest side. According to the Detroit Free Press, the ICE officer, Mitchell
Quinn, had been suspended from the Detroit Police Department in 2008 following
a domestic violence incident in which he allegedly pulled his gun on his
ex-wife in front of their son.
Kellom’s father was quoted on
WDET Wednesday as saying the search warrant was signed hours after his son’s
death.
