DEARBORN—The Arab American News has learned the Islamic Center
of America’s (ICA) board of directors held a meeting Saturday, May 9 and voted to
accept the resignation of Imam Sayed Hassan Qazwini.
The longtime spiritual leader’s resignation is effective immediately. The meeting was chaired by vice chair Ed Beydoun.
The board also
voted to begin the process of hiring two new imams to perform religious duties at the
center. A committee was formed to conduct the hiring.
The board passed a resolution that will prevent board members who are over 80-years-old from voting.
Qazwini initially resigned on Jan. 23 after being the target of anonymous letters that accused him of corruption and adultery—claims that he denies.
Shortly afterwards during Friday prayer on Jan. 30 Qazwini said he would reconsider his resignation and put it on hold as he worked on a resolution that satisfied him, the ICA’s board and the community.
The ICA will hold its annual spring fundraising dinner on Sunday, May 17 at 3 p.m.
