DEARBORN HEIGHTS — United Healthcare recently donated seven laptop computers to HYPE Recreation Center in Dearborn Heights to increase computer and Internet access in the community.
The donation is part of 35 computers the company is donating to community organizations across the state.
The donation will help establish a computer lab that will be available to youth and families who use HYPE’s free in-school and after-school social services, including tutoring and adults looking for work.
“Thanks to United Healthcare, our students will have a better opportunity to achieve academically,” said Ali Sayed, CEO and founder of HYPE Recreation Center.
“Our center now has the technological resources to enhance our current education programs and implement new classes,” said Chris Pappas, HYPE’s social service director. “We sincerely thank United Healthcare for this computer donation.”
Other organizations receiving computers from United Healthcare include First Step in Wayne County; Centro Multicultural La Familia in Pontiac; and Latino Family Services in Detroit.
Community-based organizations continue to express the need to connect technology with the people they serve. In response, United Healthcare launched the Community Computers program to help create computer labs that give underserved people convenient access to the Internet. To date, United Healthcare has donated more than 2,000 computers in 15 states, including Michigan, since the program began in 2012.
