DETROIT – A Dearborn man was murdered during an armed robbery on Sunday, May 17, in what appeared to be a set-up related to a Craigslist post about purchasing motorcycle parts.
Three male suspects have been arrested for the murder of Hassan Deaibes, 24, who was shot in the head during the altercation near Joy Rd. and Evergreen Rd, on the city’s west side. He was riding as a passenger in a vehicle driven by his uncle.
According to family members, Deaibes’ car was totaled in a recent accident. He was looking to repair some parts on a motorcycle he had purchased to use for temporary transportation.
He responded to an ad on Craigslist that was selling motorcycle parts at the location of Warren and Evergreen.
Deaibes asked his uncle for a ride to pick up the motorcycle parts. They arrived to Warren and Evergreen, but were told by the Craigslist posters that there was a change of location and to meet at Joy Rd. and Evergreen instead, about a mile north.
According to family, Deaibes and his uncle were hesitant, but decided to still proceed. When Deaibes’ uncle pulled up to a quiet street near Joy Rd, three armed African American males surrounded the vehicle and demanded the two men give them all of their money.
Two of the armed males jumped into the back seat of the vehicle while one remained outside. Deaibes had $300 in cash on him and handed it over to the culprits. One of the armed men fired a shot at Deaibes, striking him in the head.
After Deaibes was shot, the three males fled the scene.
Deaibes’ uncle sustained no injuries during the incident. He quickly drove off as Deaibes remained severely injured by his side.
According to family, the uncle spotted an on coming ambulance when he turned onto Joy Rd. and waved it down.
Paramedics rushed Deaibes to Sinai Grace Hospital in Detroit, where he was placed on life support. He passed away the next day on Monday, May 18.
Deaibes is survived by his wife Stephanie Deaibes. The two had just recently been married. He was described as an ambitious and energetic person who loved to spend time with his wife and pets.
“He was a really good kid, he had a lot of ambition and dreams,” a family member told The Arab American News. “He was a go-getter. He loved life. He had a lot of friends and family that cared about him.”
Family and friends attended his funeral services at the Islamic Institute of Knowledge in Dearborn on Tuesday, May 19. He was buried at Islamic Memorial Gardens on Wednesday, May 20.
According to family, police were able to track down one of the suspects involved in the armed robbery, who turned in the other two males. Two of the males are reportedly only 16 years old, while the third male is in his 20s.
Deaibes’ shooting contributes to an already rough year in Detroit for homicides.
After a 47 year low in murders in 2014, homicides are up 25 percent compared to the same time last year. The majority of the violence has occurred in neighborhoods across the city, with small defined pockets on both the east and west sides.
