ALGIERS — Algerians are revealing some leg on Facebook in solidarity for a girl who was banned from taking a law exam in because the university thought her skirt was too short.
The dean of the University of Algiers’ Faculty of Law stands by the decision. He told news website TSA Algérie, “Wearing a short skirt is not authorized inside the university. It’s their job to uphold the rules of the faculty. It requires a decent outfit, for both girls and boys.”
Angered by the university’s decision, a fellow student, Sophia Jama, created a Facebook page, the name of which roughly translates to, “My dignity is not in the length of my skirt.”
Sophia invited people to post pictures of their bare legs —”leg selfies”— to protest the school’s ban and dress code.
“Setting up this Facebook page was like a reflex for me,” Jama told France24. “What happened to the young girl is very tough. She was humiliated and I didn’t want her to feel alone. It’s also a way of supporting those women who have already had similar experiences, because it’s a frequent problem in Algeria.”
This unnamed student who was turned away from the exam is certainly not alone. The posts on the Facebook page have been pouring in, from both women and men, to support her.
