DETROIT—Dr. Farid
Fata’s sentencing hearing will take place before U.S. Judge Paul D. Borman on July
6.
Fata is accused of misdiagnosing patients with
cancer and making them undergo chemotherapy deliberately to enrich himself.
The sentencing hearing will include
victim impact statements from former patients. Two of Fata’s patients never had
cancer but were treated for the disease. Many of Fata’s patients received
unnecessary chemotherapy and toxic drugs.
Federal prosecutors are seeking life
in prison for Fata whose offices were closed in August of 2013. Fata
practiced medicine at his Michigan Hematology Oncology Centers in Clarkston,
Bloomfield Hills, Lapeer, Sterling Heights, Troy and Oak Park.
Fata has plead guilty
to 16 counts of healthcare fraud, and was part of a $35 million scheme to
submit false claims to Medicare.
He allegedly administered chemotherapy to patients
who had no chance of survival and intentionally misdiagnosed patients, all so
he could charge Medicare for high-cost procedures. According to the
government Fata victimized 553 patients.
