Google has released a personal “companion” to help Muslims observe the holy month of Ramadan.
The world’s 1.6 billion Muslims are mandated Muslims to refrain from consuming food and drinks from sunset to sunrise and encouraged to be charitable and pious during the month.
On Thursday morning, Google released My Ramadan Companion, a web portal that gives information on sunrise and sunset times.
My Ramadan Companion gives users directions to their nearest Halal restaurants and their opening times, and apps designed for the holy month.
It also provides recipes for the evening Iftar, eaten after sunset, relevant YouTube videos, from Ramadan video diaries to comedy and drama series, and tips on how to stay healthy during the month.
“Technology helps more than 200 million Muslims living away from their families connect and share moments with loved ones,” said Zain Kamal Masri, Google’s associate product marketing manager for the Middle East and North Africa.
“People look to Maps to navigate traffic and make it home from work for Iftar, download Google Play apps to plan their day around the sunset and sunrise, and look up Ramadan opening hours of their favorite local shops and restaurants.”
That is not all from the search engine giant and it even integrated the Play Store into the companion, after all why not take advantage of all the services at your disposal. The Play Store integration provides users with a host of recommended apps to choose and download from. These apps are dubbed as Ramadan apps and include recipe apps, calendar, and fast timings related apps to alarm clocks.
Tech companies are getting into the spirit of Ramadan quite eagerly and understand that it is slowly becoming an important segment to cater to and not to be missed out. Snapchat activated a Ramadan filter for its users and Twitter got into the spirit by bringing back Ramadan Emojis. Ramadan Kareem, folks.
