DETROIT – Federal officials have charged 11 people across the country, including three from metro Detroit, for manufacturing and distributing fake bottles of 5 hour energy drinks.

5 Hour Energy is used by 9 million Americans a week and has $1 billion in annual sales.

The fake bottles were allegedly made in plastic vats and included unregulated ingredients in unsanitary conditions. 

According to WXYZ, the three charged here in Metro Detroit are :

Justin Shayota, 32, of Troy, Michigan. Shayota was arrested Friday at his residence.  He made an initial appearance before the Honorable U.S. Magistrate Judge David T. Grand in the Eastern District of Michigan, who ordered him released on a $10,000 unsecured bond and to surrender his passport by noon tomorrow.  Shayota’s next scheduled court appearance is on July 9, 2015, at 1:30 p.m., before U.S. Magistrate Judge Lloyd to schedule further proceedings in U.S. District Court in San Jose.

Walid Jamil, aka Wally Jamil, 65, also of Troy. Jamil self-surrendered to the FBI yesterday. He made an initial appearance before U.S. Magistrate Judge Grand in the Eastern District of Michigan, who ordered him released on a $10,000 unsecured bond and to surrender his passport by noon tomorrow. Jamil’s next scheduled court appearance is on July 9, 2015, at 1:30 p.m., before the U.S. Magistrate Judge Lloyd to schedule further proceedings in U.S. District Court in San Jose.

Raid Jamil, aka Brian Jamil, 46, of West Bloomfield, Michigan. Jamil surrendered to the FBI yesterday.
