DEARBORN — The police are seeking the public’s assistance in finding out who is responsible for defacing the Bint Jebail Cultural Center last week.
The center was vandalized with graffiti-sprayed statements, relating to Sayed Hassan Qazwini, who had been hosting Ramadan evenings at the banquet hall.
“The Qazwini and Iraq Club,” the graffiti read in Arabic on the exterior of the center. Similar statements, which also attack the center’s founder Mohammed Turfe, were sprayed across the hall’s doors and walls.
The sayed had resigned as the spiritual leader of the Islamic Center of America because of feuds with members of the ICA board.
Michigan law considers defacing private property a crime, which could be considered a felony, with a maximum penalty of 90 days in jail.
Police Chief Ronald Haddad promised to go after for the perpetrators of the crime. “Crimes against our local businesses are crimes against the community as a whole and will not be tolerated,” Haddad said. “With assistance from our community partners, those responsible will be brought to justice.”
After the center was vandalized a group of volunteers gathered to help clean off the graffiti.
Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact the Dearborn Police tip line at 313.943.3012.
