DETROIT—On Tuesday, the Detroit City Council
approved a controversial deal between the city and billionaire Manual “Matty” Moroun.
The land swap deal would not only provide land for Moroun to build a second
span adjacent to the Ambassador Bridge, which he owns, but also $3 million that
would be used to improve the Riverfront Public Park.
Under terms of the deal the city of Detroit
will swap pieces of Riverside Park with the Ambassador Bridge Company. Many
Detroit residents have voiced concern about a second bridge over the Detroit
River into Canada being built for environmental reasons. Many have complained
about the increase in truck traffic and think the city should have consulted
more with residents before allowing the deal to move forward.
