HAMTRAMCK—Only one of the two Yemeni American candidates in
the Hamtramck City Council Aug. 4 primary election race is moving on to compete
in the November general election.
Saad Almasmari and Mohamed Alsomiri were two of nine candidates in the race. Almasmari is
one of six candidates who will face-off in the general election for three open
seats. He can in fifth place in Tuesday’s primary.
Both
Almasmari and Alsomiri are Yemeni American immigrants and businessmen.
Almasmari, 28, ran for a seat on the
Hamtramck Board of Education last year, but was unsuccessful in that bid.
Hamtramck is home to a large Yemeni
American community. In a previous interview with The Arab American News Almasmari
said he thinks city government should reflect the city’s diversity.
“We need somebody on the city
council who understands the large Yemeni American community. I want to help my
people and give them a voice,” he said.

square off in the general election:
