54 percent of Republican voters still think that President Obama is a Muslim, despite numerous times where he identified himself as a Christian. The poll was taken by the left-leaning Public Policy Polling (PPP).
Asked whether they thought Obama is a Christian or Muslim or if they were unsure, 32 percent said they were unsure. Only 14 percent said he was a Christian.
Many right-leaning voters have been deeply skeptical about Obama’s faith since before he became president. Republican candidate Donald Trump even questioned his place of birth a few years ago.
The perception that the President is a fraud who is lying about his background is still a movement being led by Trump supporters. 61 percent of them think Obama is a Muslim today.
During his run as President, Obama has also been able to ease tensions with Iran. His strained relationship with Israel is also a factor into why many Americans believe he is a Muslim.
Obama rarely invokes his own faith in speeches and public appearances, though has remarked about his Christian faith during the holidays such as Easter and Christmas.
Obama has stated in the past that his father was a Muslim, but that he grew up as a Christian with his mother.
