Sen. Stabenow with community leaders and officials |
DEARBORN — Sen. Debbie Stabenow (D- Mich.) met with Arab American leaders, activists and heads of organizations at the offices of The Arab American News, on Monday, Sept. 14, where they discussed the community’s issues.
The senator listened to Arab Americans’ concerns about the refugee crisis in the Middle East, immigration, civil rights and war-torn Yemen.
The attendees gave the senator examples of community members being intimidated by federal agents at the borders and airports and asked her to look into low number of immigration visas being issued to citizens of Arab countries.
Stabenow was responsive and promised to bring up these issues in Washington.
This discussion comes two weeks after similar meeting with Sen. Gary Peters at the offices of the newspaper.
