Reykjavik — The city council in Iceland’s capital voted Tuesday to boycott Israeli imports.
The Reykjavik municipality adopted the motion to ban Israeli products as long as Israel’s occupation of Palestinian territories continues, according to Iceland Magazine.
Council members said the boycott represents Iceland’s support for Palestinian statehood and is a condemnation of Israel’s “policy of apartheid.”
Israel’s Foreign Ministry’s spokesman, Emanuel Nachson, called the ban a “volcano of hatred,” in reference to the volcanic activity on the European island nation.
“For no reason or justification, except hatred for its own sake, calls of boycotting the state of Israel are heard,” the Israeli Foreign Ministry said in a statement. “We hope someone Israel will come to their senses and end the one-sided blindness fielded against Israel, the only democracy in the Middle East.”
The Icelandic ban comes as Israel battles the EU’s efforts to label products from its settlements.
Many Europeans consider Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank illegal under international law and a barrier to peace in the Middle East.
The European Jewish Council is now considering suing Reykjavik’s city council for the ban, arguing that it is a discriminatory policy and therefore breaks international law.
