HURON TOWNSHIP — Two Huron Township teens were arrested on Tuesday after one of them tweeted that he wanted to bring a gun to school and open fire in the hallways.
The Huron Township Police Department said the New Boston Huron High School’s administration requested that they respond to a possible threat to the school’s safety.
The 16-year-old student was identified and taken into custody at his residence. However, no weapons were found on the student.
Charges against the student are pending charges and he is currently being held in custody at the Wayne County Juvenile Detention Center, said Police Chief Everette Robbins.
Investigation also revealed that the teen’s friend, who was also taken into custody, re-tweeted the original tweet.
Parents of both teens are fully cooperating with the police department.
Robbins said several officers were deployed to the school, where they maintained “high visibility” during the time students arrived.
“As always, student safety is our primary focus in the Huron School District,” Superintendent Richard Naughton said. “As a result, appropriate measures have been taken to ensure the safety of students and staff. Huron school officials and the Huron Township Police continue to work collaboratively in order to ensure the safety and well-being of the Huron school family.”
This threat comes days after a Walled Lake Northern High School student told his friends he was going to “shoot up the school.” That student has been charged with making a false report of an act of terrorism.
“It’s something we take very seriously,” Robbins said. “With all of these recent events happening, you have to take something like this serious… We hope this day never occurs but when it does, we take it seriously.”
Robbins also urged parents to have conversations with their children about the danger of posting threats online.
